Pietro Calissano worked with Rita Levi Montalcini. In the last decade his scientific research has been mainly focused on the relationship between nerve growth factor (NGF) and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, demonstrating that one of the key functions performed by the NGF is to block the molecular events that, in its absence, may result in degenerative disease.
He is Full Professor of Neurophysiology at the Università “Tor Vergata”, Rome, and Vice President of the European Brain Research Institute (EBRI).

Il professor Pietro Calissano ha collaborato con Rita Levi Montalcini. Nell’ultimo decennio i suoi studi si sono concentrati sul rapporto fra il nerve growth factor (NGF), cioè il fattore di crescita dei nervi, e l’insorgenza della malattia di Alzheimer: ha dimostrato che una delle funzioni fondamentali svolte dal NGF consiste nel bloccare gli eventi molecolari che, in sua assenza, possono provocare questa malattia degenerativa.
È ordinario di Neurofisiologia all’Università Tor Vergata di Roma e vice-presidente dell’Ebri (European Brain Research Institute).
